🌙 What Is Healing? A Holistic Introduction to Health, Balance and Wellbeing

✨ Understanding Healing as Care for the Whole Self

To truly understand what healing means, I believe we first need to think about what it means to be healthy.

Health is about far more than simply being free from illness or disease. Our physical wellbeing matters, but so do our mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

When we begin to look at ourselves as a whole, rather than focusing only on one part of ourselves, the idea of healing starts to take on a much deeper meaning.

🌙 Health Is About the Whole Person

Over the years, we have become increasingly aware of the importance of looking after our health and taking some responsibility for our own wellbeing.

We all know many of the basics.

Fresh air, regular movement, enough sleep, nourishing food, relaxation and time away from everyday pressures can all play an important part in helping us feel well.

Yet knowing these things and actually making space for them in our lives are often two very different things.

Life becomes busy. Meals are rushed. Convenience takes over. Stress can become part of everyday life and we can even find ourselves feeling guilty when we stop and take time for ourselves.

Many people only truly allow themselves to relax when they go on holiday.

Then they return and somebody says:

“You look so much better for your holiday.”

It is interesting when you stop and think about what we are actually saying.

Perhaps the difference is simply that, for a little while, that person allowed themselves to rest, sleep properly, slow down, enjoy themselves and pay attention to some of their own needs.

✨ Prevention Is Part of Caring for Ourselves

One of the simplest principles of wellbeing is preventative care — looking after ourselves regularly rather than waiting until something feels wrong before paying attention.

That does not mean we can prevent every illness or health problem, and becoming unwell is certainly not a failure to look after ourselves.

It simply means recognising that our bodies and minds need care throughout our lives.

Making room for rest, movement, nourishing food, good sleep, enjoyment and emotional wellbeing can all form part of that care.

The important thing is learning to recognise our own needs and allowing ourselves to meet them.

🌙 Learning to Work With the Whole Self

Traditional and holistic approaches to wellbeing have long considered the person as more than simply a physical body.

Our thoughts, emotions, relationships, environment, sense of self and spiritual beliefs can all influence how we experience life and how we feel within ourselves.

This does not mean that every physical illness has an emotional or spiritual cause. Medical symptoms should always be taken seriously and professional medical advice sought when needed.

But alongside appropriate medical care, it can be valuable to look at the wider picture and ask ourselves questions such as:

• How am I feeling emotionally?
• Am I getting enough rest?
• Am I constantly under pressure?
• Am I making any time for myself?
• Are there areas of my life that feel out of balance?
• Am I listening to what my body and emotions are telling me?

Sometimes simply asking those questions can help us recognise needs we may have been ignoring for a very long time.

✨ What Does Holistic Healing Mean?

Holistic healing is based on the idea of looking at the whole person rather than focusing only on one isolated part.

Within Reiki and many other holistic practices, we recognise the physical body while also becoming more aware of our mental, emotional and energetic wellbeing.

For me, healing is not simply about trying to “fix” something that has gone wrong.

It is about recognising where balance may have been lost and gently supporting the whole self.

That may involve caring for the physical body, allowing emotions to be acknowledged, reducing stress, changing habits, resting more deeply or simply giving ourselves the time and space we need.

🌙 Healing Does Not Always Mean Curing

This is an important distinction.

Healing and curing are not necessarily the same thing.

Healing can sometimes mean feeling calmer within yourself.

It may mean accepting something you cannot change.

It can mean letting go of old emotional weight.

It can mean changing the way you care for yourself.

Sometimes it is simply about recognising that something in your life needs your attention.

For those who work with Reiki or other energy practices, healing can also be about creating the space for balance, relaxation, awareness and a deeper connection with yourself.

✨ Reiki and the Idea of Whole-Person Healing

Reiki is based around working gently with energy and allowing the recipient time to relax, become still and reconnect with themselves.

One of the things I have always felt is important when teaching Reiki is understanding that we are not simply working with a physical body.

We are working with a whole person.

Thoughts, emotions, stress, experiences and the way someone feels within themselves are all part of that person.

This is why Reiki can be such a lovely practice for creating space to slow down, relax and become more aware of what you may need physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually.

The aim is not to diagnose or replace medical treatment, but to support relaxation, balance and personal wellbeing alongside appropriate professional care where needed.

🌙 Giving Yourself Permission to Rest

One of the simplest things we can do for ourselves is also something many people find surprisingly difficult:

Allowing ourselves time out without feeling guilty.

You do not have to earn rest.

Try making a little more room in your life for the things that help you feel restored.

That might mean:

• Booking yourself a massage or Reiki treatment
• Spending time outside
• Reading a book
• Meditating
• Having an early night
• Taking a long bath
• Sitting quietly with a cup of tea
• Spending time with people who make you feel good
• Doing something simply because you enjoy it

Allow yourself to enjoy that time.

Do not spend it mentally listing everything else you think you should be doing.

Rest is not wasted time.

✨ Looking at the Patterns in Our Lives

Sometimes healing begins with becoming more aware of patterns.

Perhaps you always put everybody else first.

Perhaps you find it difficult to say no.

Perhaps you feel guilty whenever you rest.

Maybe you carry stress for long periods without realising just how tense you have become.

Or perhaps you simply become so busy that you stop noticing what you need.

None of this means that these patterns have caused an illness.

It simply means that recognising the way we live, think and respond to stress can help us make choices that better support our overall wellbeing.

Awareness gives us the opportunity to change the things we are able to change.

🌙 A Simple One-Month Wellbeing Practice

For the next month, try paying a little more attention to the whole of you.

You do not need to completely change your life overnight.

Just begin with small things.

• Make sure you are getting enough sleep
• Try to eat a balanced and nourishing diet
• Move your body regularly in a way that suits you
• Spend some time outside
• Give yourself genuine periods of rest
• Make time for things you enjoy
• Notice when stress is becoming too much
• Give yourself permission to say no when you need to
• Take a few quiet moments for yourself each day
• Try not to feel guilty for looking after yourself

At the end of the month, pause and notice how you feel.

Notice your energy.

Notice your mood.

Notice whether you sleep feels any different.

Notice whether you feel calmer, more focused or more aware of your own needs.

Sometimes it is only when we begin caring for ourselves more consciously that we realise just how much we had been running on empty.

✨ So, What Is Healing?

For me, healing is recognising that we are more than simply our physical body.

It is about caring for the whole self and supporting balance across the different parts of our lives.

Healing begins with awareness.

Awareness of what we need.

Awareness of where we may feel out of balance.

Awareness of when we need rest.

Awareness of when we need help.

And awareness of how we can begin treating ourselves with greater kindness and care.

Healing is about maintaining and restoring balance within the whole.

Perhaps now is the perfect time to begin working with your whole self.

🌙 A Gentle Reminder

Holistic practices such as Reiki, massage, meditation and energy work can be beautiful ways to support relaxation and personal wellbeing, but they should not be used as a replacement for appropriate medical care.

If you are experiencing persistent or concerning physical or mental health symptoms, always seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

✨ Final Thoughts

We often spend so much time looking after everybody and everything around us that our own needs quietly move further down the list.

Healing can begin with something very simple:

Stopping.

Listening.

Resting.

And recognising that your own wellbeing deserves care too.

You do not have to completely change your life.

Sometimes healing begins with one small decision to treat yourself with a little more kindness today than you did yesterday.

As ShamanicVibes, and as a Reiki Master, I believe that healing and spiritual practices should feel gentle, supportive and natural, helping you reconnect with yourself in a way that feels right for you.
