🌙 How to Use a Pendulum – Beginner’s Guide to Yes, No & Maybe Answers
✨ How Pendulums Work and What They Can Tell You
Have you ever looked at a pendulum and wondered how on earth you are actually meant to use it?
Pendulums are wonderfully simple tools, but when you first start working with one it can feel a little mysterious. How do you know what means yes? What means no? What should you ask? And how do you know whether you are doing it properly?
The good news is that working with a pendulum does not need to be complicated.
In this guide, I am going to take you through the same simple method I teach for connecting with your pendulum, discovering its YES, NO and MAYBE movements, asking clear questions and gradually building your confidence.
🌙 What Is a Pendulum?
A pendulum is a simple divination or dowsing tool made from a weighted object suspended from a chain, cord or string.
When held correctly, the weight is free to move in different directions, allowing you to interpret those movements as responses to simple questions.
Pendulums can be made from metal, wood, stone or other materials, but personally I particularly love working with crystal pendulums.
With a crystal pendulum, you are not only working with the pendulum itself but also with the traditional energetic qualities associated with the crystal it is made from.
Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz, Amethyst and many other crystals can all make beautiful pendulums, and over time you may find yourself naturally drawn to particular stones.
✨ How Does a Pendulum Work?
There are different ways people understand pendulum work.
Within spiritual and intuitive practice, pendulums are often used as a way of connecting with your intuition, subconscious awareness, energy or spiritual guidance.
When you hold your pendulum and focus clearly on a question, you allow the pendulum to move freely and then read the direction of that movement as your answer.
Some people see this as communicating with their own deeper intuition, while others work with pendulums as part of their connection with spirit guides or energy.
However you personally understand it, the most important thing when beginning is to approach your pendulum calmly, keep your questions clear and avoid trying to force the answer you want.
🌙 Before You Begin – Take a Moment to Settle Yourself
Before working with your pendulum, I always suggest finding somewhere peaceful where you are unlikely to be disturbed.
Sit comfortably and take two or three slow, deep breaths.
As you breathe in, imagine, visualise or simply pretend that the breath you are drawing into your body is fresh, clear and cleansing.
As you breathe out, imagine yourself releasing stress, tension, anxious thoughts and anything else you do not need in that moment.
You are not trying to enter a deep meditation.
You are simply giving yourself a minute or two to become calmer, clearer and more focused before beginning.
✨ Connecting With Your Pendulum
Personally, I like to begin by placing the pendulum in both hands and gently cupping my hands around it for a minute or two.
There is no need to do anything complicated.
Simply hold it quietly and allow yourself to become familiar with it.
If you are using a crystal pendulum, this can also be a lovely opportunity to connect with the crystal itself and allow your energy and the crystal's energy to begin working together.
When you feel ready, take the pendulum in your dominant hand and hold the end of the chain between your fingers so that the crystal or weight hangs freely.
Place your other hand underneath the pendulum, palm facing upwards.
Now you are ready to discover how your pendulum communicates with you.
🌙 Ask Your Pendulum to Show You YES
Hold the pendulum gently and say:
“Pendulum, please can you show me a YES?”
Then wait.
For many people, the pendulum will slowly begin to move.
It might swing:
• Backwards and forwards
• Side to side
• Clockwise
• Anti-clockwise
• In another clear repeated movement
There is no correct universal direction for YES.
Your pendulum may communicate differently from somebody else's.
If the movement begins but feels very small or uncertain, repeat:
“Pendulum, please can you show me a YES?”
The movement will often become clearer or more exaggerated.
Once you are confident that you recognise your YES movement, say:
“Thank you, Pendulum. Please stop.”
Allow it to settle completely before moving on.
✨ Ask Your Pendulum to Show You NO
Once the pendulum is still, ask:
“Pendulum, please can you show me a NO?”
Again, allow it time to begin moving.
The direction should be different from the movement you were shown for YES.
If the response is very slight, ask again:
“Pendulum, please can you show me a NO?”
Wait until the movement is clear enough that you feel comfortable recognising it.
Then say:
“Thank you, Pendulum. Please stop.”
Let it become completely still again.
🌙 Ask Your Pendulum to Show You MAYBE
The final movement I teach beginners to establish is MAYBE.
Ask:
“Pendulum, please can you show me a MAYBE?”
Once again, allow the pendulum to move in its own way.
You should see another movement that is different from your established YES and NO.
If you are unsure, repeat the request and allow the movement to become clearer.
When you recognise it, say:
“Thank you, Pendulum. Please stop.”
You now know your pendulum's three basic responses:
YES – NO – MAYBE
And that is enough to begin working with it.
✨ What Does MAYBE Mean?
A MAYBE answer is useful.
It does not necessarily mean that you have done anything wrong or that the pendulum is refusing to work with you.
Sometimes a question may not be clear enough.
Sometimes the circumstances may still be changing.
And sometimes, within spiritual practice, I simply take MAYBE to mean that now is not the right time to know the answer.
If you receive MAYBE, I would not repeatedly ask the exact same question hoping to force a YES or NO.
Leave it alone and come back to it another time if you still feel the question is important.
🌙 How to Ask Pendulum Questions
Pendulum questions work best when they are simple and can genuinely be answered with:
YES
NO
or
MAYBE
Try to avoid complicated questions containing several different ideas at once.
For example, instead of asking:
“Should I do this tomorrow and will everything work out well?”
you would separate that into individual questions.
Keep the wording simple, clear and neutral.
This becomes much easier with practice.
✨ Do Not Keep Asking Until You Get the Answer You Want
This is an important part of working with a pendulum.
If you receive an answer you were not expecting, resist the temptation to keep asking the same question again and again until the pendulum gives you the answer you wanted.
Apart from making the reading confusing, you are no longer approaching the question neutrally.
Ask once.
Make sure the question was clear.
Accept the response.
If you are unsure or receive MAYBE, leave it and return another time.
Pendulum work becomes much more useful when you learn not only how to ask questions, but also how to listen to the answer.
🌙 A Fun Pendulum Practice Exercise
One of my favourite exercises for beginners is using your pendulum to locate something.
Ask a friend to hide an object that belongs to you somewhere in the house.
Your phone can work, although obviously make sure it is somewhere safe!
Then move from room to room asking:
“Pendulum, is my phone in this room?”
If you receive NO, move to the next room.
When you receive YES, begin narrowing it down.
You could ask:
“Is it on this side of the room?”
“Is it near the window?”
“Is it inside something?”
Keep refining the questions until you locate the object.
It is a fun way to practise because it gives you something with a definite answer and helps you become familiar with your pendulum's movements.
And once you become confident, it can also be surprisingly handy when you genuinely cannot remember where you put something!
✨ Practice Is What Builds Your Confidence
Like most intuitive tools, pendulum work becomes easier the more familiar you become with it.
You do not need to begin with important questions.
In fact, I think it is much better to start with simple things where you already know the answer.
For example:
“Is my name Lesley, also known as ShamanicVibes?
“Am I sitting down?”
“Is today Saturday?”
Questions like these allow you to practise observing your YES and NO movements without worrying about the answer.
Gradually, you begin recognising the movements without having to think about them.
Practice, practice and more practice really is the key.
🌙 Best Practices When Working With a Pendulum
There are a few simple things I recommend when you begin working with your pendulum.
• Find somewhere peaceful and allow yourself a moment to settle before starting
• Keep your questions simple and clearly worded
• Ask questions that can be answered with YES, NO or MAYBE
• Try to remain neutral rather than concentrating on the answer you hope to receive
• Learn to trust your intuition alongside the pendulum
• Avoid repeatedly asking the same question because you dislike the first answer
• Thank your pendulum when you finish
• Keep it somewhere safe, such as a pouch or box
• Cleanse your pendulum regularly
• Especially when you are beginning, keep your pendulum mainly for your own personal use while you develop your connection with it
The more regularly you work with the same pendulum, the more familiar its movements will become.
✨ Should You Let Other People Use Your Pendulum?
Personally, when you first begin working with a pendulum, I recommend keeping it for your own use.
You are learning its movements and developing your own connection with it.
Passing it around between lots of people can make that early learning process feel less clear.
Once you are much more confident and familiar with how your pendulum responds, you may feel differently, but in the beginning I think there is real value in simply making it your pendulum.
🌙 How to Cleanse Your Crystal Pendulum
I believe crystal pendulums should be cleansed regularly, particularly if you are using them often or working with emotionally charged questions.
The most suitable cleansing method depends on the crystal your pendulum is made from.
Gentle options include:
• Moonlight
• Sound cleansing
• Smoke cleansing
• Placing it with Selenite
• Your preferred energetic cleansing method
Some crystals can tolerate a brief rinse in clean water, while others should not be placed in water at all.
Strong sunlight can also fade or damage certain crystals, so I would always check what is suitable for your particular pendulum rather than automatically leaving every crystal in sunlight.
Once cleansed, hold your pendulum for a few moments and reconnect with it before using it again.
✨ What Should You Avoid Asking a Pendulum?
A pendulum can be a lovely tool for intuition, reflection and spiritual practice, but I would not use one as a substitute for professional advice or factual information.
Important medical, legal, financial or safety decisions should always be based on appropriate professional guidance and reliable information.
I also think pendulum work is most helpful when it supports your own intuition rather than when you hand every decision in your life over to it.
Use it as a tool.
Work with it.
Enjoy it.
But remember that you still have your own judgement, experience and free will.

Seeing the movements can be particularly helpful when you are first learning and wondering what you should be looking for.
✨ Choosing a Crystal Pendulum
There is no single crystal that everybody must use.
Often the best pendulum is simply the one you naturally feel drawn towards.
Clear Quartz is a popular all-round choice, while Rose Quartz brings a softer heart-centred feel and Amethyst is often chosen for intuition and spiritual work.
Different crystals bring their own traditional energetic associations, so over time you may even enjoy having different pendulums for different types of work.

✨ Final Thoughts
Learning how to use a pendulum should be enjoyable.
You do not need to know everything before you begin.
Start by settling yourself.
Connect with your pendulum.
Ask it to show you YES.
Then NO.
Then MAYBE.
Practise with simple questions and allow your confidence to develop naturally.
The more you work with your pendulum, the more familiar its movements become and the easier it is to recognise when the answer feels clear.
Most importantly, have fun with it.
Pendulums can be fascinating little tools for intuition, energy work and spiritual exploration, and sometimes the best way to learn is simply to pick yours up and begin.
As ShamanicVibes, I believe spiritual tools should feel natural, intuitive and enjoyable to work with. Give yourself time to build the connection, trust your own intuition and allow your practice to develop in its own way.
